In-Home Care Verona, WI: Quality of Life

What is quality of life? It’s defined as the “degree to which an individual is healthy, comfortable, and able to enjoy life events.”  Is your dad happy, healthy, and able to engage? If he’s finding it more complicated as he ages, in-home care can make a big difference.

What Does In-Home Care Services Offer?

What in-home care services would help your parent? You should see what’s available from a local home care agency. Often, the list can be extensive and cover everything from help with personal care and grooming to assistance with transportation and housekeeping.

Does your dad take daily medications? Many older adults take two, three, four, or even more daily prescriptions and over-the-counter supplements. He takes vitamin D to keep his bones strong, but he also uses over-the-counter pain relievers for arthritis pain, a beta-blocker for high blood pressure, and a daily vitamin.

He takes so many pills that he often forgets to take them. Sometimes, your dad gets up, takes them, goes to the shower, and later can’t remember if he really took them or not. Medication reminders from a caregiver are something that can be beneficial.

Your dad can have caregivers help encourage him to exercise. His caregivers can help him plan weekly menus, shop for the necessary groceries, and prepare meals each day. Your dad has assistance with all of the daily activities he finds challenging to complete on his own.

What Questions Should You Ask?

How do you know what to ask? Sit down with your dad and ask him for input. You want to consider his budget. What can he do independently? Where does your dad feel uncomfortable trying to do things on his own?

You need to go over your dad’s health issues. If your dad has diabetes, he needs to be honest about how easy it is for him to manage all aspects of his care. Does he remember to check his feet for sores, blisters, and cracks that could become infected? Does his arthritis impact how well he takes care of household chores?

Ask other close family members for input. They may see things that you haven’t noticed. A thorough picture of your parent’s strengths and weaknesses is the best way to create a comprehensive care plan that never leaves him struggling.

Take the Next Steps

It’s time to talk to an expert in elder care. After getting a list of questions together, sit down and call a specialist in home care. Be sure you ask all of your questions and get clarification if you’re still uncertain what it costs or how many hours of in-home care your dad needs.

With in-home care services, your dad’s quality of life improves. He no longer struggles to get things done, and he doesn’t feel alone or lonely. Call an agency to learn more about in-home care.
