The older she gets, the more help your mom needs. That’s normal as a parent gets older. Health, strength, and balance all change. She wants to stay in her home, and you want to make that happen.

Before doing anything, sit down and ask her about her daily routine. The more you know about the things she does every day, the easier it is to come up with ways to make it easier for her to complete those tasks. Make these upgrades to her lifestyle and home to ensure she’s able to stay in her home.

Rearrange Her Home’s Organization

Home organization can make it a lot easier to complete daily routines. If she loves to cook, everything in her home should be arranged to make it easy for her to get what she needs. If she has to climb a stepladder to reach the food processor that’s in the cupboard over her refrigerator, she risks falling.

Move frequently used appliances to lower shelves or have them in easily-accessible cube storage that’s in a convenient location. Move the appliances she rarely uses to the cupboards that are harder to reach.

Heighten Safety With These Additions

Increase safety by adding features like grab bars in the bathroom. Make sure the rails on her stairs are sturdy and attached to studs and not just wallboard. If she has wooden flooring, make sure she has slippers or slipper socks with traction that she uses when going up and down wooden stairs.

Have Her See Her Doctor

Has your mom been to see her doctor lately? She should go for a yearly check-up. Make sure she brings a list of medications she takes so that her doctor can make sure she’s not taking any medications that counteract each other.

If she’s found to have health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, or diabetes, she needs to understand what to do to take care of herself. It may mean more exercise, dietary changes, or medications. Before she leaves, she should get answers to all of her questions, even if she thinks they’re too embarrassing to ask.

Add Smart Technology

Smart technology can be incredibly helpful for managing a daily routine. Your mom can use a smart speaker to keep track of her appointments, tell her when it’s time to take her pills, and remind her when someone is coming by. She can even control her homie’s lights with it.

She can use her smart speaker to call her family, find a movie or show on her TV, and play music. It’s also there to play games, read audiobooks, and build shopping lists. If she finds it helpful to have her smart speaker read a recipe aloud while she follows the steps, that’s also possible.

Book Home Care Aides to Help Her

Home care assistance services are one of the best ways to ensure your mom has the help she needs. Talk to an advisor about your mom’s health and the things she struggles to complete on her own. You’ll go over prices and services and be able to book home care assistance by the end of the call.
