Winter is coming. While some northern states are experiencing unusually warm weather, places like Denver had their first snowstorm leading to a massive pile-up on November 4th. Make sure your dad’s home is ready for winter’s arrival. It’s time to take these steps if you haven’t already.
Stock Up On Non-Perishable Items
If the power goes out, does your dad have canned foods, non-perishable items like granola bars or shelf-stable milk, and juice boxes? Keep him stocked up with foods that he can eat without having to cook anything if there is no electricity.
Clean and Inspect His Heating System
Ideally, you want your dad’s heating system to have already been inspected and cleaned. If not, schedule an appointment. If he has a furnace, it’s time to change the air filter if it hasn’t been done recently. If he has a boiler and expansion tank, make sure radiators or baseboards are dusted and clean.
Check the Caulking and Weatherstripping
Go around your dad’s windows and doors and check that the caulking is intact and not cracked or missing. If there are any gaps that allow cool air in, seal them.
Weatherstripping around the door and on the bottom of a window needs to be inspected. Again, it may be time to replace areas where the weatherstripping is worn, ripped, or missing.
Protect Older Windows and Patio Doors
Does your dad have any older, drafty windows? A patio door can be notorious for allowing cold drafts into the home. Plastic insulating window kits help keep the cold air from getting into his home. They’re easy to install and just need scissors and a hair dryer.
Trim Tree Branches
Look around your dad’s yard for tree branches that are loose or near your dad’s home. If he has a tree branch that brushes his garage roof, remove it. If power lines are caught up in tree branches, call the power company.
You may need to hire a tree removal company for some of this. It’s important as it lowers the risk of snow causing a tree branch to fall on a roof, car, or backyard structure.
Arrange Plowing or Shoveling Services
After a snowstorm, your dad shouldn’t be the one shoveling his driveway or sidewalk. Make sure someone is scheduled to come to his home, shovel sidewalks and driveways, clear decks and stairs, and put down sand or salt. If there’s a lot of heavy, wet snow, someone should clear off his roof too.
Make Sure Someone Checks In Regularly
Who is around to check on him? If he’s alone all day, every day, it’s time to look at the benefits of elder care. You especially want to look at companion care visits to ensure there is a caregiver stopping in each week, every few days, or every day.
If your dad needs medication refills or groceries, his caregiver is there to help him. If he simply needs company, that’s an option. Call an elder care specialist to learn more.
