An itchy, dry scalp is more than an annoyance. If your dad has an itchy scalp and can’t leave it alone, there’s a risk of tearing open the skin and causing an infection. Most cases of scalp itch are related to seborrheic dermatitis, which is a type of eczema.
Some triggers may increase the risk of seborrheic dermatitis. Having rosacea is one of them. Using hair products like shampoo and conditioners that contain chemicals and living in a climate where the weather is cold and dry are others.
Change the Diet
The same things that can trigger a rosacea flare-up can increase the risk of seborrheic dermatitis. Avoid alcoholic beverages, excess sugar, and processed foods. Plus, deep-fried, fatty foods like potato chips. Sugary sauces like ketchup are best avoided. Starchy foods like bread, cakes, and cookies are other items he shouldn’t be eating.
Instead, eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants and flavonoids like cherries and kale. Choose foods with probiotics like kefir and yogurt. Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are also good at fighting the inflammation that causes the itching.
Tend to the Dryness
Dry skin that’s flaking and leading to embarrassment may be eased with regular applications of coconut oil. Warm the oil up so that it’s liquid. Rub it into the scalp and let it sit before washing it out with anti-fungal or anti-dandruff shampoo.
Manage Stress
Stress can worsen eczema’s symptoms. If your dad is stressed, help him find ways to manage it. Daily exercise, especially exercises outside in the fresh air and nature, helps with stress. He should get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, and find enjoyable activities that help him relax and unwind.
Talk to Your Dad’s Doctor
Ask your dad’s doctor if he’s seen a dermatologist. He should have a proper diagnosis and see if there are topical or oral medications that can help ease the itchy, dry skin. He might be told to use a dandruff shampoo. He might be told to try an anti-fungal shampoo instead.
