Top Things for Your Elderly Loved One to Do if Their Spouse Passed Away
Posted on March 24, 2021 by Rene Gibbs

Losing a spouse is difficult for anyone. If your elderly loved one has lost their spouse, they are going to need time to grieve. No matter how long they were with their spouse, times are going to be tough. With this being said, there are some things that your elderly loved one needs to do to get through this hard time.

Take Care of Their Own Health

One of the first things that your elderly loved one needs to do if their spouse has passed away is to take care of their own health. This can be much easier said than done. Many people who lose their spouse have a tough time eating healthy. They might get depressed, as well. Your elderly loved one might need help from you and home care providers to take care of their health. For example, they might need someone to eat dinner with them, so they don’t skip this meal. They might need someone to hang out with during the day, so they don’t fall into a depression.

No Isolation

Don’t let your elderly loved one isolate themselves if their spouse passed away. That could be one of the worst things for them. You don’t have to bombard them with visitors. However, if you could visit your elderly loved one a couple of times every week, this could make them feel a little less lonely. If it seems that your elderly loved one can’t get through any day without a visitor, you can hire home care providers to visit them.

Take Their Time

The grieving process can’t be rushed. Everyone will grieve on their own time frame. Sometimes, the grieving process is never-ending. Things might get easier as time goes on but your elderly loved one will never forget their spouse. With this being said, it is important that you don’t try to rush your elderly loved one through the grieving process. You should remind them that they don’t need to feel rushed either. If they want to talk about their spouse, let them do this. If you feel they are stuck, do your best to talk about other things with your loved one, too. This way, their focus isn’t always on their spouse.

Conclusion

If your elderly loved one’s spouse has passed away, they are going to go through a range of emotions. It is important to make sure your elderly loved one is taking care of their own health. They need to spend time with other people and take the time they need to grieve, as well. They might need help from you and home care providers with these things. If your elderly loved one needs it, you may want to see if they will join a widowers support group.
